If In Qld you can tow heavier loads with elect brake systems off memory I thought that sort of "thing" would come from canberra as in federal rules (FORS).... but then we all know we have ONE country with 7 sets of individual rules for a LOT of things ... this was on EU forum too years ago when they realised they mixed up the LBS & Kilos on the tow bars ... I know I had a tow bar for a while but Pahtom refused to fit it .. didn't want any undue wear & tear & he also said PT1 would only tow a shoe box what is the point ??? !!!

We tow a teardrop tralier, the tare weight is 425kgs.
Our PT is a 2005 and the original factory towbar was rated at 1000kgs, and then it was recalled two years ago and a new towbar sticker limiting the towing capacity to 500kgs was issued.(I never fitted it and left the old one on
I think the original problem was the US PTs can tow a 1000lbs and it was converted wrong.
We have towed the trailer for about 3000ks so far and it is about 500kg loaded and it has no brakes, but it stops well, but the hills pull it back a lot.
Frankly I'm more worried about the auto coping more than the tow bars capicaty to pull the weight. I've have had a good look under the car during service and have seen no evedence of damage so far

We had an Elite Camper trailer which we towed behind our Harley , prior to selling it .
I did a 12 hour ride from Lennox Head to Sydney some time ago with it behind the Harley . Didnt even feel like it was there .
It had a queen sized bed with full awning and annexe and only weighed 160 kg empty .
Great little product .
Try elitecampertrailers.com.au .
It was approx $8000 including extras like hydraulid discs , annexe , stone guard etc .

I can't understand why or how the 1000kg thing happened to happen. PT towbars in the US have always been 1000lbs. Surely the Aussies are half smart enough to covert weight - you'd think!

well I doubt it was at THIS end as it also "happened" in all of EU .... they have KGS ... many got caught out there ... so it must have been the sticker put er onner in MEXICO .. or n accountant (cheaper to change just the lbs to kgs rather than have a NEW sticker made up !!) in USA ....

Now its starting to sound like its the actual tow bar, is the 'weak' point, not the structural integrity of the vehicle itself...
