Towing capacity 2 Months, 3 Weeks ago
|
|
|
Guys and Gals,
Prior to Mell and I buying "Special" ED, we were looking at purchasing a CUB Camper trailer to hook up to the back of 'the new car' that we were going to get in another year or two.
According to the book specs, a PT has a small towing capacity of 450kgs, but Ive seen a few pics around the forum of people towing trailers. I did ask the Salesman about towing and He basically warned us off towing anything bigger than an empty box trailer....
Just wondering if anyone has any advise as to whether or not ED can tow more than the 450kgs??

Best to be safe and follow what the handbook states as if you tow anything heavier you may void your warranty??? Just my opinion!!

If you do a search, I think there's quite a discussion on the topic if my memory serves me correctly... Something to do with differences between handbook and capacity signage on mopar towbar...

By memory most vehicles had the capacity to tow the minimum of 1Ton of 1000kgs
and that is what they based the capacity of a standard tow bar 1000-1200kgs.
Originally the PTs towbars were labelled at that rating but then 2 years ago approx there was recall on the PT by Chrysler and they down graded the towing capacity to 450-500kgs on the tow bar re labeling the actual bar for the revised capacity.
Now i'm pretty sure it was a car issue as the after market bars were rated higher, thou the car cant carry that weight now.
Quite a few of us have trailers but not sure of their capacities but I'd say tear drop or box trailers with a tent would be the limit!!!!!

I tried the search but got nothing to towbar, towing , etc....dont have a topic name or thread link do you??
I mean I dont want to tow the Queen Mary with it, but the trailer I was looking at has an overall weight of 590-620kg un-braked weight
Found the thread on the 'old' site??

OK, so changing direction and, going OT on my own thread...whats the majority of owners who travel together do?? camp tents-teardrop/ or Motels-caravan cabins??
Looked on the Hayman Reese website and searched products and, yup, up popped the towbar rated at 1000kg and a ball weight of 100kg...
Chief, where did that little beige number come from???

Well our family prefer motels and always get a self contained unit it makes life so much easier having all the luxuries of home, you can cook your own meals ETC ETC which can save a lot of money as take aways can add up. and they are much more comfortable in our opinion.

Hi Linz
As a club when we go away most of the time we stay at either Cabins or Motels pending availability.
If your into camping I'd love to see our club get into that. Use to do a bit in my earlier days.
A few of us do have trailers and of all types, be it for show or practibility.
We do a fair bit of travelling at times and sometimes for a couple of weeks so I it means you have to carry a bit of gear, especially if a young family is involved (in general).

We enjoy camping as well, as there is only the 2 of us though, we can fit our gear in to the car. We usually just take a little one burner stove that fits the butane(?) cylinder inside. In the middle of winter though we prefer getting a cabin. The club weekends are often at tourist parks where we have both options.

Aussie made mate and made in Wagga Wagga. PM me and I will try to get some details for you if you like. Business has just been sold so would have to do some groundwork.
Personally ourselves like most we prefer motels or cabins when we go away. The other half likes the luxuries rather than camping but it is an individuals choice what people want to do.

now that looks like it may be worth MOPAR considering .... I love to camp out for a night or 2 & used to do it a lot before the tent was used for daughters schoool camp trip to the out back .. never was the same .. time seems to be the enemy of our trips now a days .. we do a Motel due to tight time lines .. or we take HAVA with the pop top van .. thae isn't too often any more
