My first car was a '79 Corolla - baby poo brown!

Wrote that off when someone decided to slam on the brakes in front of me - rear bumper and radiator doesn't go well together lol

Had a Galant wagon for a few months ( no pics sorry ) picked it up for a few hundred to get me around while I sorted something else out... was lucky it made it to the dealer to pick up my new car haha

Then a '94 Daihatsu Charade

After that, a '98 Series II Nissan Pulsar - I loved that car

And then in 2004 bought my PT that I'd wanted since I saw that first one in about 2000/'01-ish

Re:Before PT.......What did you own before???? 2 Years, 6 Months ago
Learnt to drive in my (then) boyfriends GTR-XU1 which was a great experience.
I was racing motorbikes back then so my first car had to be a ute - it was an XA Falcon Ute which I had painted candy apple red and (fake) sidepipes and the good ol'Bob Jane TMart Wing on the back.
From that I went to:
GTR Torana
XW Panelvan fully decked out in the back with lions whose eyes lit up
SLR Torana look-a-like
2door Valiant (VG I think)
Gemini Panelvan fully worked with centreline mags etc
Then I started dog obedience trialling so - Nissan 720 Dual Cab
1990 Hilux Dual Cab
Married Brocky who had an old Fairlane and then we became a 1 car family for a while so together we had a
VB (I think) Brock Commodore
1994 Commodore Ute
1994 Hyundai Sonata
2003 Toyota Camry Sportivo
Went back to being a 2 car family due to working in opposite directions
He kept the Camry and I got a 1990 Lada Niva Toro
Sold the Lada and got a RAV4
And then due to an accident with my knees couldnt drive a manual anymore so chose the beautiful Jelly Bean (2004 Limited)
and now Brocky has the VG Valiant Regal.

We worked out that in the 16 years we've been married we've owned 10 cars and 7 motorbikes.
Bikes include:
Kawasaki Z1000, Suzuki GSX1100 (worked to the hilt), 1978 Harley Sportster, Another Harley with a flame paint job (Cant remember what year), 1996 Harley WideGlide, 1997 Harley Road King, 2000 BMW R1100 and now the 1996 Honda Goldwing which he has converted into a trike.

Oh my god, no wonder we still have a mortgage at our age. Look at all the $ we spent on cars and bikes.

My wonderful Lada - you cannot kill a Lada no matter how hard you try

Re:Before PT.......What did you own before???? 2 Years, 6 Months ago
Started driving in Dad's HK Belmont Station Wagon.
My first car was an EH Holden.
Next came an XB 302 Ford Fairmont Auto. Great car. Didn't originally come with A/C but I fitted factory air to it and from then on every car I owned had to have auto and A/C.
This was followed by an XD Fairmont 3.3L. Nice looking car but shame about the motor.
Then worked in PNG for a couple of years with car provided. First up was a Toyota Cressida and then a Ford XF Sports pack. Both manual and both with power steering. After that power steering become a must for every car I owned.

Returned to Oz and the company brought in company vehicles down to my job level which they leased. First up was a Holden Apollo. Good value motor car. At the end of the lease bought it for the wife and replaced it with a company leased Daihatsu Applause. That was at the end of 1992 and I bought it at the end of the lease. I still have that car today. Great value motor car that one. It does not owe me anything. For a number of years it was the wife's car (that was the intent of getting it in the first place) it then went on to be the car that each of my two sons had to drive when they got their licence. The youngest has driven it into the ground a bit but it survives and my new wife now learns to drive in it.

Next was a Ford Futura followed by a Camry Station wagon. Opted for a top of the range 4 cylinder over a basic V6 for the creature comforts. Didn't have it for long (maybe a year) and then spotted my first PT on the road. That was a long 3 years waiting for the lease to finally run its course. In the end my conclusion was that the Camry may offer great value for money unless you like driving as I started to find it was a "girl's car."

Jan 03 - "Hooray" - At last my first PT. Inferno 03 Classic auto with Cruise control (not standard in those days) with AMG wheels and Pirelli tyres. Fantastic car though I have always said if it is half as good as the little Applause has been over the years it will be a great car. My son bought it at the end of its lease (CCPT). Looks better today than it did when I first picked it up.

During this time also bought the grandmother-in-law's VC Commodore. Was 21 years old with only a genuine 58,000km on the clock. Had been garaged every night and was like new. Deteriorated very quickly in the weather and with help from youngest son. Last year had to "put it down and out of its misery"

May 06 - Didn't like what they done to the 06 PT. Decided that even though the current PT still had over 6 months lease I needed to act and get a low mileage ex demo 05 before they all disappeared. Picked up an 05 GT. Alas only had it for 3 weeks when someone T - boned it and wrote it off. Then picked up the current CREWZR. 05 Classic. Spending less money on the Classic allowed for some more bling. Best car I have ever owned. Well maybe? We will see how it compares with the Applause in another 15 years?

Re:Before PT.......What did you own before???? 2 Years, 6 Months ago
great histories so far . very well written .. I needed a bit of time to THINK about a proper response & IF I even fesss up to what I have had !!! pretty tame as I didn't have a car of my very own till late in LIFE !! we were a ONE car family .. so phantom has the betterer history .. I hoofed & public transported it every where till the kids were nearly out of primary school . .. BUT & SO (here goes!! I'll pop in pics from home !!) first car I "owned" was a Kingswood wagon 6 cyc ONLY pic I could find of it !!!

already 20years old I think at the time (late 80s) paid about $1000 for it ... brother in law put an auto in (manual box was SHOT!!) & tidied it up with a coat of silver paint (covered the blemishes very nicely ) .. no aircon but did have power steeering added too I think ... sold it (should have kept it costing me NIX & son could have driven it for his licence!!) to buy a tow vehicle required for the boat ... phantom had a company sedan NOT good enough for towing ... couldn't afford the real thing so we got a FORD Maverick manual (cheaper than auto too) I had to learn HOW to drive the BLESSED thing!! .. this was my undoing with the joints in my hips .. after 4 years of city driving ... sold it & bought a 1 year old nissan Patrol AUTO TI .. aka GREEN thunder as it was almost BLACK !! ... phantom had a "sooped" up white panel van:dry: .. white lightening !!
... green thunder was on lease .. so in three years IT was traded for another 1 year old emerald green Patrol .. also a TI ... had a massive Bull bar and extra sound system !! 3 years yeap U guessed it IT went too .. but I was sick of driving the monsters & we STILL needed A towing vehicle for the Voyagers on trailers .. & with the Chrysler connections .... we got one of the first V8 Grand Cherokee Jeeps LTD .. I always wanted a red car so we ordered the Sienna red (sight un seen no idea but RED!!) .. it was a rust brown !! ...

oh well it had EVERYTHING for its day incl heated leather seats extra stereo subie and sunroof .. I LOVED that car & the sound system I used to sit and wait for daughter to finish work at UNgodly hours (hospitality) with Pleasure !! .. Phantom didn't he thought the seats uncomfortable & he was using it more than ME!! I had the PVAN !! .. THEN JEEP needed a NEW rear diff (under warranty) after towing a few times NORTH ... SO he went & got THE DODGE Draganono ( it IS the black beast below)

.. he was happy BUT I was still driving a 4WD & struggling with mother in law .... JEEP had to go to be replaced with WHAT ??? ... mum could not get into any of the cars we hired or borrowed ... that was till we RENTED a 2001 PT Patriot blue it was !!! .. PERFECT .. could even get the walker & wheelchair in .. Phantom & his connectiosn surprised me with Inferno PT1 ...

LTD auto ( never did get a proper name or any bling !!) .. she had JUST 10K kms on the clock and was an ex Head office girl ...... phantom happy for his mum but not happy driving her .... so when she was no longer suitable we sold her to a lovely couple early 2005 .. & after 3 months of driving THE panel van and all sorts of vehicles inc the white cherokee hiding here !!

.. after trying all sorts of vehicles within our budget .. Phantom finally capitulated after seeing the SMILE on my face when I saw a PLUM classic at a dealer while dropping off a Voyager Activan ... got me to sit in it .. we took teh 2.4lt auto inferno demo for a test drive and he said YEAP suits U best & it does go a bit betterer & we ordered "Plums & Roses" LTD auto with sunroof & heated seat (yeap like the jeep I did miss that comfort !!) .. I didn't get any pics of her BEFORE any mods .. as they started the DAY I got her home !!! ordered from Cruisin on WA when we ordered the PT !! the name came a bit later .. after we had the rear tat put on, she was DOTSPT2 till then !!

the rest is history !! she is still being transformed into mark II as we get the time and the funds
...
what I have managed to HUNT out so far has been added !! I2s2bme YOu have got me working OVERTIME .. I like the topic by the way VERY interesting!!

Re:Before PT.......What did you own before???? 2 Years, 6 Months ago
My first car was a Fiat 124 Sedan bought for $100. Smashed 6 weeks later when an old fart did a U-turn in from of me. Drive it for another 2 years after that with the bonnet held shut with a big leather dog collar.

Replaced with another Fiat 124 Sedan (I was a slow learner). While these cars were not what you would call reliable, when they were going they were fantastic to drive compared to the alternative Datsun 120Y's at the time and I did learn a whole lot about fixing cars . The second one I named Domino because it was one thing after another with that car.

After the Fiats I decided my next car would be one I could get parts for easily. I've never been one to follow the crowd so Holdens and Fords were out and I could not go Jap so a Valiant was the only option. I bought a CL Valiant Sedan with 265 auto. Going from a 1.2l to a 4.3 was a bit of a culture shock let me tell you. Not having any experience with Valiants it of cause has rust in the Plenum and around the rear window, so while it was wet it was reliable.

After getting the Valiant bug my next car was something a bit special. It was a VH Regal 770 Hardtop. Great car but again it did have some rust. I sold this car and still cruise around with Brian who bought it. He spent 4 years turning it into a CM Regal SE hardtop and it still turns heads at the car shows.

I sold the VH to buy a CM Valiant GLX. This was the best car I have ever owned. It was Augusta Green with dark brown interior and had been optioned with the 5.2l and power steering. I'd never understood why people would ever want a V8 but after owning one I got it. They are just so great to drive. Unfortunately living near the coast with no garage the GLX eventually started to get some serious rust but never in the usual Valiant places.

Next up was another rare car, a CL Valiant panel van. It was a 245 converted to a 4 speed floor shift. A great car but I did miss the handling of the GLX. I took this car on an epic driving holiday to Perth and back. 12,000km in 3 weeks. It did not miss a beat apart from a back wheel coming off in the middle of the Nullarbor but that was my fault.

While I had the GLX and panel van I also bought a V8 CL Le Baron. I bought this with the intention to restore it but ended up raiding it for parts for the GLX. Eventually it got beyond the point of restoration but I have the full interior stashed in the roof and those admiring my new shiny mags on my Regal SE, this is the car they came from.

After watching so many cars go to the big car park in the sky I decided I would buy a new car that would not require so much upkeep and I didn't want to be responsible for the death of another Classic Chrysler, so I bought a new Hyundai Excel. Going from an old carb fed valiant to a modern fuel injected car was a revelation. I ended up doing Pizza deliveries to help pay for the car and put 190,000km on it in five years. Apart from a small problem with the gearbox that took two days to fix this car never missed a beat and drove like new. My sister recons it was a freak car because it went so well. It was an accident magnet though and I named it Cher eventually because it had has 3 new noses and a bum lift due to people running into it.

The Chrysler Bug is strong though and now having build my own house and a nice big double garage it was time to buy another Valiant. This was only ever going to be a weekend car so the search was on for a good one. First off I bought a CJ Chrysler by Chrysler minus running gear. The idea was to put the running gear out of the GLX into it but with no time to do thins I eventually sold the car.

After coming home from a job interview I passed a Gold Regal SE sitting outside ELN Ford at Tuggerah. I stopped had a look and could not believe the condition of this car. It had 68,000km on the clock and looked like new. I took it for a test drive and halfway through I got a call to say I had the Job. Needless to say I bought the car on the spot (after a bit of haggling).

Having the Regal in the and wanting to upgrade the Excel I went looking for another car. I was looking at an Elantra but to cut a long story short got a fantastic deal on the brand new 2.4l PT Cruiser to keep it an all Chrysler house

Re:Before PT.......What did you own before???? 2 Years, 6 Months ago
Starting from scratch even before I had a license I bought a VW beetle, flogged it till it popped it's cork and that took the best part of 12 to 15 months. Moved onto a standard 850 mini and blinged it to the hilt, not that you could do much in those days but I did and that kept me on the right side till I got married the first time..................LOL.
Then onto an Austin Freeway wagon, family man now.
After I got married I bought first brand new car a HQ Holden with all the mod cons for a grand total of $2484 on road. Kept me going for a while.
Then come a succession of Holdens. A modified EH Holden with a 202 motor in it and a million things done to it and it was mine of course. The family cars come and went as the number of kids grew. Even with kids I had a HX Sandman Panel Van with the works including a worked 308 motor then onto a 4 Door Monaro ( a HX I think ) the one with the gold mags.
Cars were starting to not get looked after with kids everywhere so went back to older cars. At the same time I took over the family farm. A succession of vehicles come and went including a HX Premier Holden sedan, farm vehicles and trucks and of course a couple of paddock bashers for the older boys including an XC Ford sedan and a couple I can't remember.
At about this time I also built a flying bedstead out of a single spinner Ford that I used to race at Wahgunyah in Vic. Don't ask about this as I would never do this again to a Ford or any other vehicle this old now knowing the value of those vehcles.
Farm sold and then onto a turbo charged 4 wheel drive Toyota Sahara. Then a VN SS Commodore, the biggest load of crap I've ever owned. Thank god for extended warranty because I had 4 computers in 3 years, That was a big problem with them.

Marriage No 1 ........gone.

Marriage No 2..........

Start over again with the bum out of the pants.

A Datsun Bluebird followed by a Mitsubishi Sigma then a Mitsubishi Lancer Executive..................whew, when will it all stop........

Then of course the rest is history. We bought our 2002 LTD Edition PT Cruiser and have had nearly 7 years of bliss & bling.

During all this time between 1975 & 1990 I had work vehicles supplied every 100,000 klms or about 12 to 15 months which ever come first. They included a bedford one tonner, Holden utes and one tonners, Ford utes, F250's & F350's. Quite a mixture of vehicles and I have probably forgotten a couple also.

Re:Before PT.......What did you own before???? 2 Years, 6 Months ago
Prior to taking over the caretaking duties of Pink Panther, a car was simply a device to get me from A to B, with perhaps a sightseeing detour to D. More convenient than public transport though more expensive.

First car - Leyland Marina, 6 cyl, 3 speed. No kidding - it only had three gears - 1, 2, and 3, plus reverse. Shook at 100kph speed but didn't at 90 or 110kph. Country Cream colour. Rego cost more than the car did. Loved that car. It had character!

Second car - Toyota Corona Mk 11, 6 cyl, auto. Not much character (as in no great memories), apart from the Mk 11 aspect.

England - original Mini, yellow. Felt like it needed another gear - or at least Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble to help out - when I drove it on the motorway. But this tiny beat up sub-vehicle had a sunroof and an alarm system! The alarm would, unknown to me, turn itself on whenever I went over a bump in the road, and then blare loudly when I stopped and opened the car door to get out. The battery would die whenever it got too cold (this is England remember) and I could push start this thing on my own! Lots of fun memories (apart from push starting it in the snow). This car travelled all over England, Scotland and Wales and only cost 30 quid. Another car with character - lots of memories.

Without a car for a number of years, including when I lived in a country town, then inner city Brisbane where taxis and public transport are cheaper than owning a car. Hired a few, including a bomb that broke down and was towed back to the hire company.

Then a Mazda 323 Shades model, tinted windows. Great little car for zooming around the city and on the highway. Also could cart antique and vintage furniture around in the back with the seats down. But became way past its trade in date, with oil leaks, creaking cv joints that I never bothered to get fixed and a few others more concerning aspects (despite having a new radiator, new water pump, new muffler, and new tyres).

In between time I bought a pushbike - an Avanti Discovery 8. Cost more than my first car. Internal gear hub, 8 speed. (Also more gears than my first car.) Gorgeous charcoal colour. Fully accessorised with black front basket, black rear carrier and panniers, lights, and rear view mirrors. It even has a mobile phone carrier (the bikeshop attendant asked me if it was a Secret Santa gift)! All the bike needs now are indicators to help me cope with Toowoomba drivers. Oh, and an engine - but that's just to help me.

So, it was time for another character car. What can you have after a 3 speed Leyland Marina and an original Mini with a sunroof and alarm system? That also runs on unleaded petrol and has all those acronyms like ABS and airbag thingies which I hope never inflate. Oh dear, I am getting old when I start thinking I need a Volvo!

WOW very good reading here Actually find out alot more than just about your previous cars. Some great stories I hope it will continue and more people contribute

I have posted a couple of pics I foound amongst my Photobucket
Old brown Valiant junker we had for a couple of months. (thats my eldest son whos now 25) Usually bought these cars with rego for couple of hundred drive em till they ran out then stripped the car for parts.(did 6 Like this including a ex Highway patrol charger I paid $200 for)
after 18 years I had a 2 car garage completely full of just parts(Yep Chrysler enthusiasts are hoarders and that is a FACT!!!) And 1 Charger that never ran out of spares.

Other 2 pics are of the VC I bought for a $100 Fitted a VK frontend and interior and gave it a a couple of coats of Kermit green straight out of a beaver. It spent alot of its time on the back of a tow truck aswell....

More pics soon
Plus I have another idea for a thread aswell so you may need to go through those old photos a bit more.
But keep the stories and cars coming its a great read.
Thanks
