TOPIC: Electric mirrors
#64126
Electric mirrors 2 Years, 1 Month ago
My RHS mirror doesn't seem to want to do as its told anymore. It feels like its the spring inside the switch if there is such a thing. Does this sound like a job for an auto electrician?

Just don't ask for the price of the full external mirror unless you are
1 - sitting down
2 - and talking to your bank manager at the same time.

Unsure on that one Jelly Bean. Does it feel as though it's in in the switch itself?

Jacqui can you hear the electric motor work?
If not it will be an electrical prob, if you can but nothing is moving it would be a mechanical or component problem.
Does the left mirror work?
Does the mirror head fold in and out ok?

Does the left mirror work? YES KIND OF
Does the mirror head fold in and out ok? YES

The left mirror itself (not the whole thing) goes out but doesnt go in.
The right mirror itself (not the whole thing) goes in but doesnt go out.
The mirror heads do fold in and out ok. It seems that only one side of the switch is working??

Just maybe it's a faulty switch. I'm only guessing but maybe an auto electrician first to make sure if it is faulty.

Booked in for Friday at the Auto electrician at Gatton. Will let you know the outcome. Oh and he's going to hook up my new airhorns while I''m there too.

Waste of a trip. The auto electrician confirmed it is the switch and told me to come back when I can get one. The air horns dont fit anywhere either, so they go on the nice but useless Christmas present pile. Luckily, I had shopping to do and an assignment to hand in at the Uni or it would have been a wasted 40km round trip.

Horns should fit in behind the grille How many do you have, as I've seen 7 trumpets fit(down low)Behind the bumper
Someone may have a photo of some installed they could post???
Switch is slightly cheaper than a mirror

Hi jelly bean i do have my air horns behind the front grill and i have 7 horns and on im not blowing them know what you will do before u take it to your auto elec you need to get a thin strip of metal about one /two mm thick i used the metal strip that you put in the gap between carpet and vinal flooring now cut the strip to fit across the front you will find a lip on both sides where the grill fits and screw the strip of metal then mark where you are going to mount horns and will you need to leave room below the hood catch so it does not hit the horns now place the horns from large to small either side of the hood catch now it does not matter what colour goes where as too they then hooked up to the compressor which you mount to the centre bracket in front of radiator then you can cut hose to each horn and they are colour coded note the your longest horns should fit just below the front bumber its tight but the will fit

i hope this helps

Cheers

Used to have 5 in the same place till I diced them. I cooked the compressor motor and now have an Ooogahhhh horn mounted elsewhere where it cannot be seen, even by the law. In fact my mechanic doesn't even know where it is. I don't think he even realises I have a 2 way switch mounted in the car somewhere.

Thanks everyone for your advice regarding the airhorns, you've given us a couple of good ideas.
In regard to the switch for the mirrors, was quoted $240 for parts only, but managed to get one off ebay from the UK for less than $50 including postage.

Gee I hope the mirror switch isn't frozen solid with the extreme weather they're having over there Jelly Bean.

Yep we buy quite a bit from the UK and States (not just car bits) and it is always a lot lot cheaper including postage than getting it from OZ, don’t understand that. For example we got some extreme sports sunnies from the states, 2 pairs were $120 including postage with a 3rd pair thrown in for free. In OZ the same sunnies were $120 EACH.

Even if the 40K round trip did work out to be a waste of time its still nice to just drive the PT. We polished ours on Sunday and it has rained all week in Hervey bay so I used the Wrangler as I just couldn’t bear to get the PT dirty but today the sun shone and it was great to cruise in the yellow PT.
