Hi Ted
My PT comes as standard with 17 inch alloys (route 66 model) and the tyres they have on them are 205/50/R17 so that must be right if Chrysler fit them.

Best advice is to stick to the size you have. Shop around though because the prices in this size vary a fair bit. To replace with the original Goodyears you are looking at around $270 - $290 a tyre. For that price you could also consider something like a perrelli. At the other end you can get cheap Korean tyres for $160 - $180. I must admit I have used these on my last car and they were not too bad apart from wet weather performance.
For my PT though I went with the original size in a Toyo tyre priced in the middle. I could have gone a bit wider with a lower profile but though the ride was firm enough already. So far have found them to be very good and a lot quieter than the Goodyears.
As for the speedo being out 3% is not to bad. Australian standards still allow 10% plus or minus error. You will find most car manufactures will have some degree of error depending on tyres sizes fitted. Lets face it they are hardly going to recalibrate specific models depending on tyre size. Even if they did just the difference in a new tyre and a worn tyre could be 1-2% anyway.
I know my speedo reads a bit slow so on the freeway set it at just over the 110 mark.

Forgot to add. When I was looking at tyres I also looked for a brand that had an effective rim protection design. This is pretty common with the lower profiles but some are better than others. It's a thick hard bead of rubber where the tyre meets the rim. A well designed tyre with this will save a lot of gutter rash on the wheels.

Do not always assume this, Chrysler Australia there prefered tyre for australian conditions and once its shipped to the dealer (don't forget they are basically a franchise)they will tend to fit there own prefered brands especially if you bought a used car. The tyres fitted by my dealer were over sized in width which caused the original hubcaps to click on and off as the wheels spun and it was very annoying. sounded similar to the cards we attached to the spokes of our bikes with a clothes peg when we were kids.

Not sure about this statement because the wheels and tyres are the original standard fit from the manufacturer on the route 66 model I have and the size and tyre type are as stated when the car was released by Chrysler in the USA. But hey I am open to any disagreement.

I had 225R50 on 16" rims and 225R45 on 17" rims (both 7" rim width). Speedo is spot on. Check the tyre calculators readily available on the web. You can not fit too wide a tyre on the rim for its width and you can not fit too wide a tyre if you want to remain legal. The way I read the regs it is maximum +25mm which means 7" is maximum legal width. Lots of guys go bigger. I don't ever want to give an insurance company that sort of "out". Talk to your tyre dealer. I wouldn't stick with what you have if it is Chrysler standard (Goodyear NCTs). If you want a smoother, quieter ride and better handling go for a maximum width high quality tyre. Also these are for your safety so don't skimp! In an emergency (and hope you never have one) an extra $200 on a set of tyres is well worth it.
