Time for some new boots.. 5 Years ago
Well I'm now up to 44,000 on my car and am looking around for a new set of tyres. Original Goodyears I'm being quoted anywhere from $253 up to $290 per tyre . Cheapest quote I got was for a set of Nankang's at $190 each.

Looks like I'll split the difference and am thinking about the Toyo Sports. Anyone else had any experience with this brand?

Craig Had Hancooks on my Hyundai but is a much smaller size 185/60R14 vs 205/50Z17 on the PT Cruiser. They were good in the dry but I wasn't very confident in their wet weather performance.

It turns out that the 205/50Z17's are not very common. You can get them but no one has them in stock. Funny thing is David has the same size on his car but in a Pirelli P6. Hate to think how much they are going to be to replace.

Well guys you would be surprised by the price of the Pirellis. I had P6000 Powergy from new (after market wheels) 225/50R16 on 16x7 rims. Handle well, ride well, and wore well (about 60000km). So impressed replaced them with exactly the same thing. At that time they suggested a new equivalent Yokahama but I stuck with what I knew. Put a set of the Yokahama's on my Applause. Did not wear well at all and have since replaced them with P6000 Pirellis.

After another 60000km on the PT put on a set of Pirelli P6. Supposedly a step up from the P6000. Can't really tell much difference and wear wise they have only done about 20000km so far. I prefer the look of the P6000. For the same size tyre it has a more square wider look.

Price wise - a lot less than you have been qoted for the Goodyears - $199 per tyre at Bob Jane - but the 205/50R17's might be different if they are not as popular a tyre

We have firestones fitted and have found them excellent. at 130 a tyre from jax, i thought that was pretty good. But they are 15's so 16 and 17" tyres are less common and hence the price goes up.

Cheers

Dean. I could probably get a few more thousand out of mine but I'm starting to notice they're just not what they could be (especially after driving David's with new tyres) but will feel much happier going to Albury on new tyres.

Got 59,000 out of originals and this time last year put on a set of Good Year Eagle Ventura's from Bob Jane @ $175 ea. Couldn't be happier. Have found them to handle excellent except in wet weather as we haven't had any. ( Only kidding, well not sure here ) Have had the occasional shower and no problems. Would run with them again when they are done.

My second PT still has the OEM Goodyear NCT's (now upto 24000km). Compared to the Pirellis it is the proverbial chalk and cheese. If you want a bit of tyre squeal off the line and around corners go with the NCT's as the Pirellis hold on a lot better. More noise/vibration gets through the 60 series standard tyres as well.

I still like Kumho's. The 712's are a favourite for the PT.

I'm running the p6000's as well. Would agree that they are good, but for me the wear hasn't been good and the price was pretty high too.

You really need to shop around as tyre places will rip you off if they can. Try Continentals too. I had them on my previous car and someone else drove it on the track at Oran Park and were very impressed.

Shop around is the word. When looking for the latest set I had one Bob Jane dealer offer me a "special" deal on the P6's - he would sell them to me for $235 ea when normal retail was about $335 ea. He suggested I ring around to confirm that these were a better tyre than the P6000 and that the normal price was price $335+. So I did, rang another convenient Bob Jane outlet and without any haggling at all he offered me the P6's for $199 ea and told me that Bob Jane had a special deal on these running at that time. The other dealer was giving me a real "special" deal wasn't he!

I got quotes from 6 outlets but hard to compare tyres directly as they all have brands they get kick backs from and will push.

Booked in for Saturday morning and have gone with the Toyo's at $220 each. Otherwise I think I would have gone for the NTC5's it came with but the cheapest place to get those was the other end of the coast.

Will report on them after I have done a few km's
