re spare tyre 3 Years, 8 Months ago
has any one tried fitting a full tyre under the back is there any reason you cannot make up a new harness that will take a full tyre, my son is into this manufacturing thing was going to ask him to make me one as i have four good wheels sitting at home doing nothing.

I haven't read of anyone having done it, but I have thought about it myself.
The first order of business would be to verify that the spare is the same diameter as a "regular" wheel/tyre - if it is, (which I believe to be true) then a different "cage" ought to be all that's needed.
I can tell you there would be a market for them....

I'm under the same belief as Don, but the retaining cage would have to be reworked for the thickness of the standard wheel. As well as a ground clearance with lowered cars especially the cars that are lowered 2" in the rear & 1 1/2" in the front or more.

Couldn't agree more Keith. Certainly would be a market for it if it could be done. Lowered Cruisers, what are you talking about. I thought they were all normal. I actually thought it was just a sagged suspension.

we have started to make one 3 Years, 8 Months ago
We have taken all measurments and are going to try and make one for one of my spare 15inch wheels to fitt my son thinks it no problem making them but i did explain to him some wheels are different to others etc thicker in size , I was like you thinking about the hight etc but as Edd explained to me the muffler is lower than the wheel and the bar running across the back is very low it would be a big tyre that passed that, any way we will know on the week end as he is going to modify it then and try my standard 15 inch wheel I would be happer with that as a spare. let you know how we go.

ps if this works what he is going to do is make a chrome peice to fitt the front of the tyre so you dont see the tyre hanging down.

Like the Idea and would be very interested in one for my Bonny Blue, as I really hate having a different spare to what is on the road for the vehicle. Every other car that I owned with mags all had a mag spare to go with it. Looking forward to hearing on how it goes.

If it does work you could make this out of polished alloy or stainless steel. If you make it up square it would look just like a drop tank.

As we all know, the PT can come with 15, 16 or 17" wheels from the factory, but the tyres are different so the overall size comes out the same - the smaller wheels get tyres with larger sidewalls.
ANYWAY -
I bought a 17" stock wheel and tyre from another forum member who went to aftermarket wheels. Even tho my PT came with 16" wheels, I got a flat and put the 17" wheel on and the car drove fine - MUCH better than with that ridiculous spare. I keep the 17" spare in the car, but I would sure like to put it where stock (next-to-useless) spare resides.

What I'm saying is everyone could buy a 15 or 16" wheel/tyre spare - even if you have bigger wheels - it'd still be much better than that stupid spare we get with the PT...

I saw yesterday a stupid 'spare' on a small car and it looked ridiculous!!! it was on an Echo - and the normal wheel isn't that much bigger than the 'spare'.... I will ad tho that he was doing about 110km/h on the M4 I thought they were limited to 80km/h??!! I dropped back as he past me as there was no way I wanted to be in the middle of whatever happens.... I'd love to get rid of the 'emergency spare' and have a full size wheel.... Wendy's answer to this when it came up some time ago was to simply put a spare in the boot

If someone has some spare 16, or 17in wheels they are going to make a fortune here if it works. I'll take 1.

That's what I and my daughter have, but would love to get the space back.

Chief- (Graham)-
There are plenty of stock wheels&Tyres for sale in the US - so many upgrade their wheels. My daughter hit a pothole and destroyed a wheel, so I located a PT owner who had bought new wheels, and bought 3 wheels w/tyres for $100@. Replaced my daughter's destroyed rim, and we each have a spare. (By the way, the fellow had already sold the 4 wheel/tyre). Only bad part was I had to drive about 150 miles to pick them up, as shipping would take a while and be expensive...
ALSO-
Neon Wheels fit the PT. Not cosmetic match, but for use as a spare, much better than the standard joke for a spare.

Both my daughter and I have had to use our full spares, so it's worth it.

Yes I would prefer to have "real" spare with all the h'way runing that I do. The loss of space would be very noticable with the Cabrio if I carried a full spare in the boot.

I carry a can of 'fix a flat' around town and only shove the spare in when we do a road trip - lost my spare when I did the dual exhaust and towbar.

The funniest thing we ever saw was a WRX with a dodgy spare on it (being driven by some undesirable looking types mind you!) Phone call to the boys by the husband saw them being pulled up and charged with car theft!!!

re cans of flat tyre 3 Years, 8 Months ago
I was told not to use that spare tyre can as it leaves a residue in your tyre that is hard to get out thats why im trying to put my original wheel as a spare, son has taken mine off and is working on the bracket. see how it goes on monday to fitt back in let you all know then,

I also got the same advise on the puncture repair in a can. Only use if desparate due to the residue.

If you pull this idea off I might be interested if any one want's to sell their space saver.
