Do I Really Need To Do This???? 3 Years, 8 Months ago
I have done some reading through other posts about break pads/break disc replacement and everything seems to vary quite a bit. I currently own a PT GT 2006 (not too tough to figure out, eh?) and have many, MANY issues to date.

Don't want to give the long story (cause it is LOOOOOOOOOONG), but the short of it is I have just had the 1.5 year service and they are telling me that not only the front break pads but the front break discs need replacing! They have given me the disc measurements (LHS 22.0mm/RHS 22.1mm) and I know the minimum disc width is 21.4mm.

Can anyone offer advice in this situation? This service was done by the Chrysler dealership (AKA. pack of thieves) and if it does need to get done I plan on taking it elsewhere, but to me it sounds like they put really poor quality discs on in the first place, and now want me to cop the bill to have them replaced.

On an another but slightly related note, can anyone point me in the direction of a decent service agent so I don't have to use Chrysler? I am in the SE of Melbourne (near Dandy) but I am not sure how the run-of-the-mill servicer would handle a Chrysler.

I have an 2005 ... nearly 60,000 (low really !!) on her and I haven't been told about brakes no mention when she went for final 3 year check up either just spark plugs & leads mentioned adn they had been done ...... I have been LUCKY the fellas here at work do the services when they have flat spot in their work load .. beats paying them for standing around . just a suggestion take your vehicle for a look in to Mopar motors 188 settlement rd thomastown ... I know it is not real local but Sam and the team know PTs backwards & upside down and frontwards ... tel no is 9464 1177 maybe a call and a quick chat ...

I've replaced my 2006 rotor with cross drilled & slotted rotors when the car was new so I have a brand new set of standard rotor front & rear. It is not a big job to replace them just give me an offer, if you like & we can get them to Melbourne with out going passed the far north coast pirates in I guess a week if Mark is tripping back & forth to Melbourne.

The factory discs are pretty shabby and usually can't be machined. Most good mechanics will be able to fit after market rotors that will last you much longer. Mine is a manual with 175,000 k on it and I've got through 2 sets of pads and got rid of the factory rotors at around 70,000k.

My 03 had a similar story. Replaced rotors at 35000km. My son now owns that and picked it up of me at about 125,000km. I did not put another set of rotors on it but I think he has. It now has about 155,000km.

My 05 has about 57,000km and has not needed new rotors.

My original four door had three set of pads & very late in the piece I replace the rotor, then ofcourse, changed them back to the old one's when I traded but that would have been close to having 140k's on the clock.

Thanks for all the advice, it's really appreciated! My PT has done just over 30,000 k's so far, but I guess if it has to be done it will. Just in the process of contacting Sam to see what he can do for me, though I do recall I had him quote on servicing my car when I first got it. Too bad I was a lazy sod and decided to go with the nearby stealership.

After my previous DIS-service they didn't even balance the wheels properly, as well as leaving the clamp on the coolant hose loose, being left with a car that shaked at high speed and left a mess on the driveway. Took in the next day, and it took them the entire day to fix both problems, all the time calling me at work and saying there was no issues. CRAZY!

Anyway, I'll look into Mopar and head for a trip. I work in the CBD anyway so its not too bad anyway. Plus looking for some add-ons too, but I'll consult with this Sam fellow first to see what his take is.

Once again, thanks for all of the helpful replies!

One thing about going to Mopar Motors and seeing Sam & Georgina, is that you can hold 'bling' up to your PT (particular colour) and see how it really looks before you decide. Not all 'bling' suits certain colours. What looks good on one colour, doesn't necessarily suit another.
You will be pleased with the service and interest these two show with regard to your particular PT. Have fun!!!

Take Care

That is how I ended up going to Mopar Motors exclusively as I couldn't find a dealer that could service my PT properly.
