Dropped mine 2 inches all round and just have to be careful not to enter or leave any driveways at any speed at it will hit.
Bump stops were cut down, and the handling is great.
Had it done at a performance place about 6mths ago.

Wanted it done as soon as I got the car, cause it sat up like a 4WD
but had to wait till we bought our new house (house choice depended greatly on driveway mind you!)

I think the PT's should all come lowered as standard. They look MUCH better.

Know the driveway feeling well. Waiting for the brother in law to have a spare day so we can get some fancy schmancy driveway instead of the lumpy dirt we're using now. No lowering until that's fixed!!!

Thinking of putting 18"" wheels on and replacing the springs with lower ones...or should i stay with 17'' and drop it?

I'm on 17's and will maybe/possibly/thinking about dropping it. Mad bloke down in Melbourne is riding dumped on 18's and the ride is rather harsh, even in comparison to the 17's.

It's your choice (and your budget!!!)

FYI, given up on waiting for the brother in law to do our driveway and paying to get it done instead - gotta be ready in case someone comes Prowling around..........

dropping it on 17's or 18's is fine the wheel/tyre circumfrence should be the same, but just less rubber. You'll neeed to watch pout for potholes and check insurance as 18's are a fair bit bigger than factory

I'm of the understanding you are allowed to go 2 sizes above factory fit?? Is that right?

Re: Handling 7 Years ago
I've also heard that 2 sizes is fine, but how does that compare when the Classic comes out with 15's, Ltd 16's and the '05 Tourer with 17's (I think)? Is it rated on the Classic or the Tourer? Surely there is little difference in the rest of the car that would mean that the tourer could take wheels 4 sizes bigger than the classic standard?

Re: Handling 7 Years ago
It goes on the tyre load ratings not actual wheel diameter. In Qld you can go up to an 18" with low profile tyres.

Re: Handling 7 Years ago
This is from the RTA Web Page on wheel sizes.

Basically you can go up one inch from the largest size on the tyre placard attached to the vehicle. have just checked mine and the tyre placard only shows the one size of 17" for the touring model, so I can go to an 18".

You'll need to chect your placard inside the drivers door to see what you have.

The 1 inch increase is only for modification without notifying the RTA. I think from memory if you can proove that for example a classic and touring have the same suspention and settings it would be an easy matter to get approval from the RTA for 18" Wheels.

If you want to go bigger that this I think your looking at some serious engineer reports to get anything bigger passed.

Having said that your insurance company will more than likely stop the fun before the RTA does. Most will only allow a one inch increase from your model.

Hmm, well that sucks, have to check out ACT rulings on that one. Tyre placard says 15, I have a Limited which came with 16's, and would like to get 18's at some stage.... the woes of owning a PT.....

Re: Handling 7 Years ago
Guys, have a good read of that. By the looks of it, you can go an inch wider than largest factory recommended (I don't know the width of the 17's but the 16's were a 6") and is says that the maximum or minimum combination of wheel and tyre can't be different from factory by more than 1/2 inch. That means you could go to a 19" wheel with a low profile tyre as long as the rolling diameter is pretty much the same as factory specs, providing the tyre complies with load and speed ratings and such. www.tirerack.com has got tyre specs including rolling diameters.

Re: Handling 7 Years ago
I've lowered mine in the rear only, didn't touch bump stops and hit the stops no more frequently than stock.
I did rear only because:
1) The front is low enough - I already scraped a few times
2) I could do the rears myself, whereas fronts require a spring compressor and likely alignment
3) I didn't like the "butt in the air" look - I like the level look of my PT now.
I only went 1.5 or 2" lower (I forget) If you lower more, suspect bump stops will hit with greater frequency. I got my rear springs from a PT'er who wanted a lower front only!

Also did a strut brace - careful not to overtorque when installing.
