TOPIC: Air Bag Light
#44321
Air Bag Light 4 Years, 1 Month ago
Just thought I would ask for some advice before I head off down to the dealer. I was almost in an accident over Christmas. I had to brake very hard to avoid a head on accident. Ever since then my Air bag light & chime comes on about every 40 seconds. I think a connector somewhere has become loose as the Fuse is ok. I can not find any trouble codes in the engine computer but I guess the airbag stuff is not connected to the power train computer. It more likely to be in the body control module etc which I can not seem to find anything about. I have checked all the seat connectors as they are smart airbags that sense if you are sitting in the seat. If anyone else has any info please let me know. I have also disconnected the battery for an hour & reconnected & still the same.

Hi Jacko, in the Ask Motor Mike section of www.ptdoityourself.net/
there are these 2 sections , the second of which I suppose answers your question Gotta go to the dealer Also I suppose they are for much older cars and maybe theres a way that some one will know how to reset the chime with a newer one but then you'll never know if the airbag is gonna deploy when its supposed to

520. I have a 2001 PT TE. Where are the sensors for the air bags, and at what speed will they activate? - Kimberly, from West Virginia.

A dual front airbag system utilizes driver and passenger airbags. Both the driver and passenger airbags are certified to new federal regulations, which allows them to deploy with less force than prior airbags. The primary occupant restraints in this vehicle are the seat belts, which require active use by the vehicle occupants. The front airbag system is a supplemental passive restraint that was designed and is intended to enhance the protection for the front seat occupants of the vehicle when used in conjunction with the seat belts. The driver airbag includes an inflatable airbag and inflator unit behind a trim cover in the hub area of the steering wheel. The passenger airbag includes an inflatable airbag and inflator unit behind an airbag door in the instrument panel above the glove box. The Side Impact Airbag System utilizes two air-bags, one mounted to each front seat back frame. This system is designed to enhance protection of occupants in the event of a side impact collision.

The front airbag system electrical circuits are continuously monitored by a microprocessor and software contained within the Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC). The ORC also contains impact sensing elements, which are monitored by the ORC to determine when an impact occurs that is severe enough to require front airbag system protection. When a frontal impact is severe enough, the ORC initiates the inflator units of both front airbags to deploy. The Side Impact Airbag Control Modules (SIACM) control the seat back mounted airbags (one left and one right). If a SIACM determines the impact is severe enough, the appropriate airbag will inflate, tearing open the front seat back trim cover protecting the occupants. Once a seat back mounted airbag has been deployed, the entire seat back as well as any damaged parts must be replaced.

Data reflecting impact speeds to activate the sensors is not provided. For additional information regarding the PT's Restraint Systems visit the Pit area.

606. I have a 2001 LE PT. What does it mean if the air bag light goes on and buzzes? It does it every once in a while, but doesn't stay on. - Jason, from Illinois.

The front airbag system electrical circuits are continuously monitored by a microprocessor and software contained within the Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC). The ORC also contains impact-sensing elements, which are monitored by the ORC to determine when an impact occurs, that is severe enough to require front airbag system protection. When a frontal impact is severe enough, the ORC initiates the inflator units of both front airbags to deploy.

An airbag indicator lamp in the instrument cluster lights for six to eight seconds as a bulb test each time the ignition switch is turned to the ON position. Following the bulb test, the airbag indicator lamp is turned ON or OFF by the ORC to indicate the status of the airbag system. If the airbag indicator lamp comes ON at any time other than during the bulb test, it indicates that there is a problem in the airbag system. Such a problem may cause the airbags not to deploy when required, or to deploy when not required. A trip to the dealer is in order to diagnose the air bag indicator light.

Re: Air Bag Light 4 Years, 1 Month ago
Such a fun topic

My airbag lght came on several weeks ago (still on) As most know I work for a dealer and I thought it would be a quick simple fix.

Ok diagnosis, Hooked it up to computer. Error codes present and cleared took for a test run Light came back on. Hooked up again same error codes, Cleared again. seat wiring checked all clear but seems to be in seat belt stork, passenger side. Disconnect, clear codes, take for test drive. Light comes back on after a few minutes. hooked up, cleared codes, disconnect driverside seatbelt. which seems so be the problem as far as they can see.

after 7 weeks, chime is really starting to get annoying, drove over 2000 ks over Xmas. Nothing major to report. Chime seems to only come on under certain conditions. Mainly in trafic and lower speeds. Back to work monday and hopefully airbag fault will be fixed very soon. Will keep you updated.

Due to work load and time constraints it is not a quick simple fix. It is also not a common problem. This is the first of this type at this service centre. Usually it is what's called a clock spring which may need replacing when the airbag light and chime go on for no apparent reason. usually $200 to $300 part and repair.
Also check both the seat connectors (driver and passenger). But best left to your dealer. As can be both expensive and technical.
I do not work for Chrysler or represent Chrysler. I work for a dealer who sells 8 different makes of vehicles including Chyrsler, I am not a mechanic or motor repairer. Just so you know I do not endorse any particular dealer or car manufacturer. By way of recomendations.
I just like my Chryslers and if any infomation I can get is of some help to others I will pass it on.

Hi Guys

Thanks for the info. I have pulled the clock spring out. With the battery disconnected of cause. It is ok. All electrical connections buzz out when you turn the steering wheel lock to lock. I thought it would be ok as my cruise & horn work ok. I have checked all the seat connectors & the airbag computer control module. The last step is the instrument cluster. I have had this out before to put felt tape around the reset button. That fixed the buzzing noise you get when you are going down the road. I will let you know if I fix it. Do not fell like spending $1000's of $$ to fix it.

Re: Air Bag Light 4 Years, 1 Month ago
I had my airbag light & chime come on. I stared at it and got mad that I'd have to take it to dealer, so I banged the horn - and the light went out.
A few days later, light & chime again, I remembered, so tried hitting the center padded area of steering wheel all around the perimeter, and again light went out. Happened a 3rd time about a week later, again I banged the horn area. That was a few months ago, hasn't come back.
I suspect mine was a loose connector in the steering wheel hub.

Re: Air Bag Light 4 Years, 1 Month ago
All ok. I sprayed every connector from the airbag computer under the center console & all the connectors under the front seats for the side airbags with silicone spray (electrical WD40) spray. I then put it all back together & drove about 200 m & the light came on. I then noticed my steering column was up in the highest position. I put it down & the light did not come on for 20 minutes. I put it back up & bingo comes on all the time. I went home pulled all the plastic covers of the column. Sprayed all the connectors & untied the cables pulled some more slack & tied them back up. I have not had the light on for over 2 days now so fingers crossed all is ok again.

Re:fixed the beep 2 Years, 8 Months ago
I am having a similar problem , where the light and chime comes on for a minute/s then it goes off for 30 seconds or so then comes back on.. seeked advise , traced , talked this him and him and so on , at the end I hada trip to my local dealer , I am on a ding dong with them , as they " followed procedure and so on " so they changed the air bag module on the passenger side , before realising they were on the wrong side of the car (Oz driver's side is US passenger side ), so they imported a driver's side air bag from Singapore , "that will fix the problem" . they changed it , guess what ..?? the light and chime is still on/off . Now they tell me that there is an electrical problem where they need to take the carpet and central console out , worse scenario $3700 .
That's when I stopped and the conversations began , as I stated to them , I will not have them changing bit and pieces of the car to finally find that the problem was as originally stated an electrical one , unfortunately they got the scanner.

So far , so good ... a very very persistant auto electrician got in the case , the light and chime has not come on for the last two days.. he traced the fault to a wire ( part of a harness )that goes from the wiring that comes from under the carpet under the driver's seat , at that point it joins another harness that goes to the side air bag on the driver's seat .Basically your right leg as it goes from acelerator to brake and back possibly moves the wires .( trying to prove that, this is an engineering problem would be an issue .Worthwhile looking into if you have a similar problem .. it's cost me a lot of pesos so far..
