I know this might sound silly but my Wrangler does this when the aircon switches on and off and is quiet normal and has done it ever since we have owned it.

Is it the fan or is it the clutch on the air conditioning compressor?

Don’t know but it makes a click noise when it comes on and goes off but you can’t hear it in the car only under the bonnet and all seems pretty normal.

Sounds like the Air Conditioning Compressor to me!
If gets a little low in the gas it tends to engage heavier then when it gets even lower on the gas the Air Conditioning will stop working.

Ray I know even less about air conditioning but have heard it said what you just put on here. In fact I did have the same thing happen to a work vehicle a number of years ago and it was a Ford. You could be close to the mark.

If you turn the Key to the "off" position does the noise stop???

If so don't turn the key to the "on" position and it should be fine

You went to the same mechanical school as me by the sounds of it. I was going to say that it may be the doo-hickey near the whats-it knowing that they can click at times. Other than that, make sure your blinker fluid is topped up and your muffler bearings are lubed and all should be good to go!
