TOPIC: BROKEN AERIAL
#60873
BROKEN AERIAL 2 Years, 6 Months ago
The firm rubber type aerial fitted to the rear of our Cruiser's roof got
ripped off today.....I tried to slip under a closing security roller door
at our place...and well you know the result....pretty stupid I agree.

The question I need to ask is " can these things be refitted or is a new one needed ? "

It looks like the arial is wired to " the other part " on the roof.

I still get a reception but it will have to be fixed properly.

Any advice ( constructive ) would be appreciated & yep I've learnt a lession.

Cheers
Chris

Advice!!!
To save this from happening again maybe just cut the roof off while your at it
Is there any damage to the roof Chris?

Going by this I'd have to say maybe a new one as if its in 2 pieces and wont screw back together then I'd say a new one is needed.

Saw an elderly lady do this in a brand new jag but hers was far worse it was coming down and she could see it in front of her as it was just above the roof line so she spead up and the door hit the roof half way along and scraped all the way too the back.
No not quite finished yet...
hearing the loud noise, instead of continuing on she quickly puts the car in reverse and reversing back the way she had come gourging the roof from middle to back then from back to front and with the whole weight of the door pressing down aswell.

Poor old dear came over and asked me if I could buff the scratches out before her husband finds out

Just cuz you want a convertible Chris, doesn't mean you have to try to do it yourself! haha

Hope there's minimal damage mate and the new aerial fits snug

The car is OK, but dear Gwen is now sporting a new shorter hair style.

I actually thought the door's sensor might have malfunctioned however I viewed the
film and the only problem was me.

Thank you for the replies fellahs

Re:BROKEN AERIAL 2 Years, 6 Months ago
Dear Chris ,
Some time ago , a company that is going to remain nameless , was changing some street posts .. the traffic controllers were a the front of my house and still believe their radios interferred with the operations of the roller door , not realising while reversing that the door was only 3/4 up. result: roof aerial was no longer where it was meant to be .. as well as a couple scratches on the roof . A new aerial will cost you $485 from Chrysler plus fitting unless you do it yourself , it is that price because it also doubles up as your GPS aerial , there is other radio antennas around similar to the original if you are not interested on the GPS function .. yes, I did not check the position of the roller door when reversing .ooops

Re:BROKEN AERIAL 2 Years, 6 Months ago
Thanks for the info.

I will need the correct replacement aerial because of the GPS function
you mentioned & my next step is to speak to my son-in-law who might be able
to help ( actually do ) the installation.

An expensive mistake for me but it's history now.

Thanks once again

Chris

Re:BROKEN AERIAL 2 Years, 6 Months ago
that is what Chrysler told me when I questioned whether the car came with the aerial for that price . I don't have or use a GPS , I look at the Sun or the stars when I get lost , or use the Nokia's phone navigator .. to install it you need like anything else "small hands" to remove the nut under the roof lining .. good luck .

Re:BROKEN AERIAL 2 Years, 6 Months ago
suppose the OS versions get GPS as a standard option?? .... and it is just another obselete wire on the Aussie ones .. BUT if it is there .. can we use it ... as in . I have a after market CB internal areial (NOT for GPS) that is OK

but it would be BETTERER to be able to have a hard wired one including the GPS .. providing it works with good reception .... my country radio reception is NOT as good as Phantoms Hava .... only thing is then the GPS may not be as portable??? .... BUT would be interesting esp for those that rely on the GPS ...
PS ... I used to use the GPS when I was doing sales & pickups etc .. and able to travel OUT further (it has been to many places ALL by Plane & then in rentals beat carrying a street directory for every place in the suit case !!) .. but now it just looks "pretty" & I still carry the Melways .. oops QLD it is a REFERDEX ... hey topic is replace of a broken aerial ... sorry .... but any info would be interesting !

Re:BROKEN AERIAL 2 Years, 6 Months ago
Spoke to Dick Smith in Hornsby who said the Tom Tom navigation system didn't
need any special aerial ie GPS

Phoned the Chrysler mob down in Chatswood this arvo but appears it is the "Mechanics picnic in NSW" today.& they couldn't give be a figure.

Got onto to Chrysler down south who quoted about $90.00 for a screw in type
aerial suitable for 2004 Cruiser.

Mine doesn't look like a screw in so I am none the wiser

I am getting a reception & the nav system works so I am gunner
put it on the back-burner until I get motivated to do something about it

Cheers

Chris Chris Chris if you really want one let me know. I know which one you want as mine is the same. Yep, I can't get you a price today as it is our picnic day(although I'm no Mechanic) No job without them here hehehehehehe. Will probably PM you the price tommorrow night. I take it the top half has broken off the bottom half or has the whole lot been sheared off

top half unscrewed

as it should look

How is Dick Smith these days? Handy living so close to you. But its good he can give you some advice when asked.

Don't see what GPS has to do with anything when there isn't an in-car navigation system... The SatNav systems have their own GPS aerials... sounds like they're spinning you porkies to make a few extra $$$

They all just screw in - depends where/how its broken off as Colin said
