PETROL FOR PT'S 2 Years, 1 Month ago
Theres many different brands out there at the moment, would
like advice on what other people are useing to there best advantage.
I have a 2005 auto with screamon demon coil, hotwire leads, air pod filter
better plugs.
Just after some ideas, think I need to try something different, useing unleaded
at the moment maybe I am doing the wrong thing.
Idea's welcome.

Our Inferno is a 2002 Limited 2.0 ltr and has had the coil, plugs and warm wires on it from about 18K and a K & N filter and have always run it on Caltex 95 with an occassional couple of tanks of Caltex 98 to give it a good clean out.
Found the ordinary unleaded made it run like crap. For the better performance and the extra cents per ltr I believe it is worth it.

Our 2004 Classic 2.0 ltr I believe has been run on 95 for it's whole life and I continue to do so. It has the K & N filter but just the ordinary coil etc. ( may change in the future, who knows. )
I will be running the occassional tank or so of 98 in it to. We have only had it long enough to do 3000 klms so I haven't really had time to say yah or nah as yet.

These are my opinions only and others may well have different opinions but I imagine others will answwer the post also.

I've tried it all except the ethanol .. Nothing conclusive ... IF I can find it use the 95 & a tamk of 98 once a month ... only put the 91 in for a few lts when the price is high & then tank full when price is down with 95 .... I get no ryme or reason for the good OR bad fuel economy .. at present getting the better economy in the french oiler or LPG V8 aussie ..

I use Caltex 98 all the time and find I get slightly better mileage. Should I drop to 95 with only the odd tank of 98 or is it fine to continue on 98.

Perhaps first what are your expectations of trying different fuels? Maybe then can make some suggestions.

Mostly use Shell V-Power, sometimes Caltex 98 or BP Ultimate. I think that the extra cost is partly offset by better mileage. I always go for the high quality big brands because:
- I remember hearing some stories years ago about how bad some of the cheap fuels are for the motor etc,
- when my mother bought a sports Falcon a few years ago, I rang the NRMA technical specialists and they basically said if the car is a keeper, look after it with good fuel,
- I had many instances in the past with cheap fuel being contaminated and my Chrysler Sigma would be choking on it.

Maybe things have improved, but my PT's a keeper so I'll stick with the better one's. Many people have mentioned the K&N filters though, so I'll look in to getting one of them in the next service.

Keep it standard as you can Sandy while it's under warranty.

I've always run the standard unleaded. Never had a problem with it, goes well and economical. Did use the premium unleaded a few times and felt it did run a little better under acceleration but also noticed the fuel economy wasnt as good. I guess if you have more power you want to demand more so then goes the economy.
Tis happy with cruis'n.
I use Caltex as my preference.
I do have a K&N air filter and it did improve the breathing of the intake.

You use standard fuel or ethanol blend around town but then sometimes run 98 on trips. Why do you use the 98 on trips?

I have always used ultramax in my PT and it runs great with realy good fuel economy.I used to work for a rival oil company delivering Petrol for 20 years but prefer the Shell product. As for engine oil I use Mobil 1 and the car never uses any oil.

Re:PETROL FOR PT'S 2 Years, 1 Month ago
Usually use 95 & 98 RON fuel - mostly Shell, Sometimes Caltex or BP or Mobil... Occasional Regular, but doesn't run as well...
( Manual does say "Min 95RON" )

I NEVER use "Woolies" branded stations that are next to supermarkets as they seem to have the cheap crappy fuel for the 4c'ers discount... Every time I have used this, I get the alarms going off on the dash and lights etc... once that tank is rid of, all is good again! Caltex with Woolies brand on them seem to be ok, but not the actual Woolies ones that are now branded Caltex... My PT seems to be a little sensitive to 'bad' batches of fuel and gives warning lights and sounds on the occasional tank if I'm not selective on where I get it... Always good again once that tank is gone...

I use them all no real preference what evers at hand and budget allows.
More often than not Regular Unleaded and on occaisions Premium and E10

I found that Premium was good for Hi-perf. Cars and V8's
It was very noticable with these cars both economically and performance wise

But not as noticable in the PT

It really comes down to your preffered choice and how you drive.

Yes I agree with Col on this,we use usally reg/unleaded or premium,we stay away from e10 with the cruiser as we used it and we felt the car was a bit sluggish !!
Again each to there own with this.

Re:PETROL FOR PT'S 2 Years, 1 Month ago
I was always under the understanding that the small variances between 95-98 octane fuel for city driving is hardly noticable.
"off on a tangent" "TINY" with his 385 hp 350 has been tuned to accept 98 octane.
if i use regular he will "ping" with the faster flash burn in cylender, thus robbing me of many Hp.
I always run the premium in all my motors and for the performace, I have them tuned to suit.
yes tiny acheives 9klm to the litre highway cycle. and can get as low as 1-1 city, depending on how much fun im having.
so far in the 3 months and 5,000klm i have had "Grace" her consumption on 98 octane fuel has been 10.1L per 100klm from a mixture of city and highway usage.
the extra cost of the premium fuel dosn't even come into my calculations.
for if i wanted fuel economy i would have bought a hyundai getz.

so i supose what i am trying to say is as long as your car is tuned to the petrol that you use, be happy with your choice and enjoy the ride.
