Re:PETROL FOR PT'S 2 Years, 1 Month ago

Ok this seems to be getting very intresting and i thought i'd check what it states in the handbook of my new 2009 GT Special Edition.
This is word for word as follows.
Fuel requirements.2.4l Engine.
this engine is designed to meet all emissions regulations and provide excellent fuel
economy and performance when using high quality unleaded gasoline having an octane
rating of 91 to 95. The manufacturer recommends the use of "95" octane for the optimum performance. the use of "PREMIUM" gasoline is "NOT RECOMMENDED' as it will not provide any benefit over regular gasoline in these engines and can cause heavy spark knock at high speed and can cause damage to the engine.
it also states fuel with no more than 10% Ethanol is Ok to use.
also it states not to use any fuel containing any % of METHANOL as it will damage the engine.
So in the end I know what I'll be using now! and not paying the premium price for premium fuel, and knowing that my warranty will be all OK and there will be no damage done to my DONK.
Don't you just love the Manufacturers Manual. Full of everything you need to know.

For those that have models earlier than 2009 check the appropriate manual as they will say nothing like the above. Also very early manuals indicated not to use ethanol blends - engine and fuel system specs change over time even though physically things may look the same. Earlier componenets may not be ethanol compatible so check first.
As for higher octane causing spark knock I have never heard of such a thing but low octane may cause engine pinking, particularly when hot and under load and will lead to engine damage.
I think the real answer here is if 91, or 95 works for you then stick with it (you obviously don't push it hard) and save your money on fuel. Shell V-Power works for me - proven over 200000 of PT kms (2 PTs).

whether the engine knocks, pings or whistles It still comes down AS proven above that it is personal choice.
How much pressure do you run in your tyres
What brand of oil DO you use
Do you use distilled water in your battery or staight out of the tap
and you'll find the answers to these are all different depending on the OWNERS choice
Quoting manuals written by manufacturers maybe good and well
But what do your mechanics use? what they reccomend or what you preffer
after 1 week and 3 days the original question still remains un answered WHY?
because its personal choice and experience that will decide what you choose
and you won't find that in no manual French, Mexican or otherwise
and the original question regards a modified PT not a standard one so throw the manual away unless it still gets stamped for services

I am quite experienced in this particular topic but know that others are as well and passionate of what they do and mixed opinions will always be on the agenda.
Some forum users also reckon that this forum shouldnt be moderated and a freedom of speech is ok.
So best we move on from here before everyone gets to upset. Tis good to hear the different opinions but it doesnt need to be to personal.
So folks theres one answer to this and that is I'll lock this post for a while so we can have a breather.
Anyone has any issues on this post, your more than welcome to contact/PM me.

Ok after a fair bit of moderating we move on but lets try and help the very first post that was entered.
From the last weekend I noticed all the Caltex servo's are not displaying "UNLEADED" in yellow any more but on that pump they now have "OCTANE 91-E10" in green!
CREWZER you may be more experienced than any in answering this one with your background, Would you know the date the Government have put down for when the "Unleaded" is drawn from sale to have the "Octane 91-E10" in its place?
And -
Caltex has Octane 91-E10, then Vortex 95, then Vortex 98 now available at all pumps.

darn ... are they bringing in a LIKE product that is safe to use in Plums & roses or the later model Pts or I may have to swap between the 91 & 98 (depending on PRICE etc) as SHELL is the MOST convenient place to tank on the way to P to get the quality & price (I like to support the ex pat NL country too !! ) ... Prices go UP in the Giipsland area On Saturday arvo (for people going BACK to MELB!!) NOT thurs AM .. so I tank WED pm here in MELB & FRIDAY night when I get to Barinsdale ... complicated but works for a few dollar savings at BOTH ends .. also need to keep a LOG book for a few months (Dreaded FBT & tax issues) so Fuel usage etc will be noted more accuratley as of next month or so ... should be interesting... oops SORRY TOPIC .. what fuel is preferred in your PT !!??? ..

I wasn't aware that E10 was going to replace Unleaded. Shell's action to remove 95 and stick with 91 and 98 would seem to suggest not.
Interestingly Caltex have reduced their available products to 3 as well, yet they do away with 91 and retain 95. It might seem like an easy thing but providing 4 products on a forecourt is logistically very costly.
Shell equivalents are E10 and V-Power for 98. Shell currently maintains Unleaded but no longer has 95*, and as far as I know, no plans to replace it (*in the eastern states - Note Shell still has 95 available in WA, NT, and TAS).
E10 typically has a higher octane rating than Unleaded due to the Ethanol. Typically its octane is 94 but the minimum requirement is 91. However before anyone gets excited octane rating does not mean more power. In fact Ethanol has less energy content than gasoline and so you will get less power and higher fuel consumption. Typically it is about 3c/litre cheaper so you can make you own decision whether the cheaper price out weighs the increased fuel consumption.
For those who are interested.

This morning down our way Caltex is still displaying the yellow unleaded, still got the 95 & 98. Don't know about the other brands.
Then again we're out in the sticks so it might take a while to change. Will watch this one with interest.
