If it is the icon of the Engine light that comes on as it did in our 04 recently it mainly has something to do mainly with an electrical problem. Ours was bad, very bad plug leads and plugs shot to pieces. As soon as replaced we haven't seen it since.

Phil do you notice any sort of a slight miss or possibly any breakdown under heavy acceleration, that's what bought ours on very quickly.

Someone else may have other suggestions also.

My light came on the other month drove for a week or two and just went out
with out even noticing. My son has a plug-in tech tool that give you the code
or fault but he's been away lately and has not had time to plug it in to see the
fault, ah ebay.

Apparently if you disconnect the battery it will cancel the light out. Sometimes the computors in the car fix or overides the problem. They've been designed to do that...self tunning all the time. The light stays on as its stored the fault in a code form and this needs to be read by a special diagnostic scanning tool.
If you do disconnect the battery and the light goes out and remains out all is fine. If the light comes back on again then you will need to get it looked at as there will be something wrong.
By disconnecting the battery you may loose your stored radio stations.

You ought to be able to get the codes....

Put key in ignition, turn to "on" (spot before starter engages)
turn back one click to "off"
On
Off
On
In the mileage area one or more codes, such as P0304 will appear, followed by Done.
You should always get at least Done.
You can Google the error codes.

Try it - costs nothing.
In the US, it's known as the "key dance".
