Cam sensor light 1 Year, 11 Months ago
|
|
|
My Cam sensor light is an intermittant proplem. I took my 2003 PT to my local and was told it was possibly the sensor but could not be sure that changing it would solve the fault. The car drives well with the light on, at times there is a power loss, when I turn the ignition off and restart the car, all's well. Any help would be appreciated. Tom.

Hi Tom
Welcome to the forum it is a bit quite right now as most have been to COTM
2010, but to your troubles the best thing to do is to rest the computer by
disconnecting the battery for about 10 minutes then reconnecting it, if the light
comes back on there is usually a problem. There are machines around these days
that plug in the electricals and tells you the problem. Mark in Sydney (back of Bankstown Airport has one) of course for a charge usually can diagnose faults.(INJECTION PERFECTION)

G'day Tom
I am going through that process at the moment. But my problem is (by the code)the crank position sensor. I am still a bit dubious about getting some dodgy fuel, & by the motor missing may have played up with the sensor's.
I have been reading a few forums from the USA. I would'nt say it is a common problem but the cam sensor has been replaced by a fair few people. If you wanted to change it, I would seriously consider buying one from the states. I think I seen them on some online stores for around the $55US mark. Not sure what they are in OZ.
Good luck.

Thank you Keith, will try the battery thing, I had my sensor tested, it came up as fine, then after a while the dash light came on again. I would use your guy but I'm in Adelaide. Thanks again. Tom.

They are about $200 here, my problem is that my guy couldn't tell me if it was indeed the sensor, otherwise I would have had it replaced, it's intermittant. The problem is similar to yours, that is, the crank position sensor came on and stayed on for a few days, then off for a couple, now on again. What a pain. Thanks Andrew.

GGGRRRRR.... What a pain.
My problem is intermitent as well.(crank position sensor) Was good for a few days now back again. My understanding is that if the sensor fails completely the motor stops.
Does anybody know if a test on a DRB scanner (or the chrysler techs computer) can determine if a sensor is completely faulty?
Have ordered one from the states anyway. If it's not it, look out for one on ebay soon....

Here's a new one for all, I changed my petrol, by that I mean 98 octane, it's been about a month now and no problems with the sensor light or power loss. Cross fingers all is OK or is it just a coincidence. Cheers, Tom.

Good luck with that, it should improve performance, however PTs should run well on standard too.

Won't get into any debates on fuel but we run 98 in both our 02 & 04 and have no problems at all.

It was a tank of 98 that was in the car when it started to play up. I always vary my fuel (a tank of premium at least once every two months) so I was'nt to concerned about the sensor problem being just the fuel. Thou I did think it may have been a dud batch. But not to sure now.
Sensor still playing up & am still waitng for my part from the US of A.
Fingers crossed.

My PT so far is doing fine, no cam sensor probs since using 98 octane, it's not that I have a problem with premium fuel, it's that I assumed that small modern cars should run well on standard. Good luck with yours.

G'day Tom
I find it strange that your problem has possibly been resolved with your fuel.
My sensor arrived today from the states (finally)& so far so good.

I would have been surprised by this too until I have had several experiences with my PTs where I have found 98 Octane seems to compensate for slight engine faults.

Hi Andrew, I have a 2005 PT and use standard petrol, no problems there, maybe later, I hope not, but my 2003 is still running fine using 98 octane, no cam problems since switching over. I bought the 2003 new and until this year standard was all I used, the 2005 is second hand. Not sure what else to say except I'll have to wait and see.
