I had a look at a manual 2001 Limited today with 83,000km. The engine is hard to start, it blows a little smoke under light acceleration, the engine hesitates at low revs, and there is a loud mechanical constant metallic squeal eminating from the area of the camshaft (possible worn camshaft bearing?).

Should I stay clear of this example, or are these just quirks?

It also feels like the front right hand disc rotor is grinding under normal braking.

My view is have a look around first to see whats out there. Pending what their asking for and what mechanical knowledge you have matters but if the Cylinder head has to come off to repair the Camshaft that could be a little expensive!

Thanks for the response White Cruis'n. I have been searching for a PT for over a year now, here in Tas. They rarely appear on the used market, so the choice is very limited.

Maybe you need to venture North and take the PT for a "Spirit" run Plenty to chose from on the big island!
