A/C Thermo fan faulty 2 Years ago
Was just in for service (96k) and had them look at my a/c as its not doing much 'cooling' lately... Thought maybe a re-gas? ... oh pity it wasn't just that!

They said it's the "Thermo fan" that's faulty - they got it to work again - probably gave it a whack with a hammer!? haha - BUT no idea how long it will now work for - 1 day/month/year/??? - they got a price for replacement = $1200 !!!??? OUCH !!!

Any thoughts/ideas/suggestions?? Should I just try for a second hand one from a wrecker or something??
(obviously I'll need to find out exactly what I need first?) *sigh*

Might just have to brave the windows down for the "free a/c" if it fails again

You could try Sam at Mopar Motors in Melbourne for a 2nd hand one. Or you could try a Davis Craig Thermatic unit. Hopefully that would be a lot cheaper than $1200 but it would probably need some adaptation. Maybe they have kits?

It may of just been loose conections or some minor problem that only a hammer could fix. If its working fine now just finding out costs and locations of parts is not a bad thing but I'd hold off buying any just yet atleast until it stops again.
Mine is also playing up but they seem to think it has something to do with the switch.
I like how they guess whats wrong before they actually look at it.
Sort of makes you feel its going to be a cheap fix lol
Until you get the bill and they say "ooooh no sorry we had to replace the whole thing" LOL

Well when I booked it in and told them the aircon wasn't cooling too well, they 'suggested' a re-gas was probably required being a 5yr+ old car... turns out that was not the case when they got in there to look... It's still not really working too well, so sure sounds like a replacement is required!?

The test for a fan is to start the car, turn on A/C - engine fan should come on.
If it doesn't, poor A/C is only 1 problem - engine overheating is also possible if you get stuck in traffic.

Hi gankster I am haveing a simalar prob with my 05-06 high speed relay not clicking thermo fan on when turning on air con, thermo comes on when engine temp is up though. I had my aircon regassed with die added to check for a leek, now i run air when out and in clear traffic but turn it of at lights or stopped. The air con has high and low pressure cut off switch. The thermo fan has two relays high speed and low speed, they are on the left hand side as you look down past radiator cap on the back of shroud. I have not had time to get my car in to have the problem looked at yet but as has been said on this sight b 4 find a good auto sparky in you area. I find it a little hard to understand that there are no machanics or sparkys that have PTs. I hope this helps you a little bit. Regards Mac.

Fellow Cruisers,

Have bought several items for the PT and also for my Yamaha FJ1100 from E - Bay. Parts for the FJ are very cheap on e-bay compared to the arm and leg yamaha charge. As with all purchaces on e-bay you have to trust the firm you are dealing with. Thats the buyers call. I have been lucky so far. Re the radiator fan, yes the postage from the US is a killer. I have e-bay set to show cost of parts and postage in Aus $'s. Fans from the US range from 240 - 450 $ Aus for part & postage. Still well less than the $1200 the dealer wanted. At the end of the day its your call which way you go. Hope you have success and keep cruising.

I agree with all you have said
Some find the postage a tad high
But it is still good value and I do reccomend buying from there over local genuine parts.....
But be very careful what you buy especially the 2 ltr models
As they did not produce 2 ltr PT's IN the US ONLY 2.4 ltrs
as most parts are for the 2.4 ltr
things like fans and exteior/interior parts are fine(don't forget Lefties are different to right hand drive interiors)
But driveline parts are not as readily available
BUT as always there is a BUT a few of us have found that some 2 ltr Neon Driveline parts are interchangeable with the 2 ltr PT
but still be wary of what your looking at before you buy,
as its a little bit harder to get a refund especially when you have to pay to send it back.
Postage is not refundable

Re:A/C Thermo fan faulty 2 Years ago
Hi, the same thing has just happened to me with my cruiser when I put it in for an air-con re-gas and was shocked to be told I needed a new thermo fan and the cost for a new replacement genuine one.
I contacted Sam at Mopar Motors in Melbourne just last week, and he has one reconditioned genuine one in stock at present for $500 less $50 trade in on your old fan.
He also tells me he has a container of new ones coming from overseas but may take up to 8 weeks to arrive which will also sell for $500 brand new. (Sounds like a better deal to go new than re-con) Apparently he says these are made by the same outsourced company that makes the fans for Chrysler, but they just simply don't have the Chrysler logo on them. I can live without the logo for that price. Hope this helps.
